Our youngest has got to the stage of telling us “jokes“, they are only funny because after they say one they giggle so hysterically and cutely that you have no choice but laugh! “Daddy why did the poo-poo cross the road? because it was stuck to a poo-poo!

I keep having the thought that God has a great sense of humour too, my wife says “he created you, so he must do!” (cheeky!), but seriously think about it (I know I said seriously when its a blog post about humour), he puts people together as couples when everyone else thinks “how did that happen?“, a friend of mine told me that her brother is 6ft4 but his wife is 5ft, my wife is slightly over a decade older than me, even she wonders sometimes why he put us together!

Then you have nature, barmy cats who cannot decide whether to be in or out, the bizarre looking duck-billed platypus (although I would like a egg-laying mammal of action like Phineas & Ferb!) Interestingly provocative shapes of fruit and flowers! I am sure he laughs at the stupid things we do, even the crazy japanese gameshows! Although with that, he is probably thinking “why are they doing that!” Kids do and say the funniest things, as we are God’s children he must find us funny in the same way. Life in general has funny moments, but life isn’t a 24/7 comedy show!

In Frank Peretti’s novel “Piercing the Darkness“, there are events in the novel which cause a church minister and the editor of the local newspaper, to be locked in a cell together, in the local jail, they discover that the minister is praying and battling against the “spiritual bad guys” and the editor is fighting against the police chief and other “flesh and blood bad guys“. When they get put together in a jail cell they are able to see what is truly going on in their town on a physical and supernatural level.

In 2002 I was in South Africa, there was a policeman visiting the local school, as he knew a friend of mine, he agreed to give me and someone else a lift up to the main road, what I didn’t realise, was that we were getting a lift inside the part of the car where the criminals get put whilst being taken to jail! God’s timing meant that my companion and I were in the right place, at the right time, to help someone change a tyre on their car on the side of the highway (I could swear there was 3 of us trying to lift the corner of the car with our bare hands for the amount of time needed to swap over the tires, which seems bizarre!)

The question is however, what sort of humour has God got?

  • in Matthew 21 -Jesus was quick-witted and turned the tables on the high priests who were trying to make him look bad!
  • In 1 samuel 5-6 the philistines who had stolen the ark of the covenant and put it in Dagon’s temple, were struck with haemorrhoids, and their golden statue “fell in awe” in front of the ark 2 days in a row as if bowing to it!

There are loads of funny moments in the bible, when you wonder why on earth it was recorded, like the bald man being taunted by the youths and then the bears eat them or the man who was so obese that the knife which was thrust into him was “consumed” by the rolls of fat and was not seen again, his servants thought he was on the toilet!

Because God created us with the ability to laugh and the fact that we are made in his image, I believe that it means that he does have a sense of humour, laughter helps you feel better and has been recommended for aiding the healing process for sick people! So try to find something to make you laugh each day not just to keep the Doc away, but because there is so much joy to be found in God’s hilarious creation!
